Director - Martin Humphrey

Musical Director - Peter Theobald

To be performed at The Theatre Royal, Winchester

Wednesday 10th - Saturday 13th November 2021

Like so many Ayckbourn plays this is fun and, thankfully, has little of the nastiness that can be found in many of his other works. Apart from its obvious humour there are plenty of jokes and situations aimed at amateur groups which we can enjoy.

A Chorus of Disapproval is about a local theatrical group putting on a performance of The Beggars Opera. This is an operetta where all the music is 18th Century folk tunes and tells the story of Macheath, his band of highway brigands and all his various loves and conquests. The play runs its story in parallel to The Beggars Opera staging where Guy, a recently widowed man, joins the production and, beginning with a suitably lowly role, finds himself, through a series of events, taking on the main part of Macheath.

Most of the characters sing as their Beggar’s Opera alter egos, but we will also need 'chorus' cast to augment the songs, and people the scenes.
