REVIEW

Daily Echo

Winchester Operatic Society's traditional Yeomen held its own in what can be a rather dated tale of duplicity and unrequited love.

Credit for its success lies with the strong principal cast and their pleasing blend of voices and insightful character portrayals, though the less powerful voices had a tendency to be swamped by the orchestra. Shadbolt (Peter Barber) excelled in his comedic role and the interplay between him and the sour Phoebe (Katie Hickson) was a triumph. The light-footed Jack Point (Adrian Hickford) also amused with his antics, complimented by the beautiful vocals of Elsie Maynard (Sophie Pentecost).

The ensemble pieces were rather static but that may have been due to the numbers on stage. They harmonized well and looked fitting in their authentic costumes.
